The Cherry on Top   11/27/08  (dom)

I didn’t think Glenn had much left in his tank after last week’s mayhem, but once again GS proved me wrong. Glenn Schwartz  draws his inspiration from a never ending well and Glenn drank deeply last night. GS brought back his amps and laid down three divinely-inspired, staggering sets that left me wondering if GS has any musical limitations whatsoever? He just does whatever he wants seemingly without effort. I’ve spoken to so many aspiring guitar players over the last couple years at Hoopples, guys who look upon him with awe, study his technique, listen to recordings all the while trying to figure out just how he does it. The answer is easy. You just surrender yourself to it, without fear, without thought, there are no artist limitations. Now all they have to do is figure out what the IT is. Good Luck guys……

Glenn performed songs last night he’s done hundreds of times before but he did some reworking of the verses. That may be an understatement - in some cases there were entire new sets of verses. The first set opened with Judgment Day and I knew he was on right away, after all it don’t take a brain surgeon to know when GS is focused on the business at hand. The set also featured a full blown version of Motor City and then my perhaps favorite moment of the entire night an All my Sorrows followed by Stepping into the Sunlight both were money and had reworked lyrics. The rest of the night was amazing to say the least. The place was brimming with energy and drunkenness and yet this was one of the most attentive audiences in recent memory, quite remarkable given its size. I think for the most part they were dumbstruck to see Glenny laying it down like it was nobody’s business.

November 2008 was one incredible month of music down at Major Hoopples all four night in the month were amazing musical journeys each one seemed to trump the other and Turkey Day was the cherry on top. I hope he doesn’t slow down and as the Birthday of Christ approaches I doubt it…..until next week
