Hoopple's has been Glenn Schwartz's main gig since October 1989. Norm (Sr.) who bought the bar in 1981 shared the following thoughts with Dom about the bar, Glenn, and Cleveland:
I've owned Hoopples since 1981. The third floor was a cat house for the guys working in the factories, docks, boats, mills etc. The bar was called the Hilltop before I bought it and was infamous for shootings, illegal games, drugs etc. When I bought the bar there were no windows looking at the city and the bar was on the other side of the room.Hoopples has seen the "flats" come and go in those 28 years I've been here. I loved the old flats before everyone came, and I still say to this day the beginning of the end came the day the city and corp. America took notice. Exp......."Bp riverfest"
The bar has won numerous awards over the years:Best view.........Best cleveland tradition.......Best neighborhood bar.......Best juke box (when it was 45's)......25 Cleveland top hot spots at night...........Ten places to go in Cleveland before you die.......Southwest airlines flight magazine "when you’re in Cleveland on Thursday evening go to Major Hoopples to hear Glenn Schwartz.”
You know about the James gang playing with Glenn in the bar - "Joe Walsh, Dale Peters, Jimmy Fox and Glenn." Saw it and still don't believe it.............You know the David Byrne "Talking Heads" story...
20 Years in oct. 2009. Same bar-same night- same artist....Glenn.
